In 2013, Dunlosky and colleagues did something rude: they reviewed hundreds of studies on the ten most common study techniques and ranked them by what the evidence actually supports. The results upset everyone — the techniques students love most (highlighting, rereading) scored lowest, and the ones that feel like work scored highest.

The podium: what actually wins

Practice testing — answering from memory — took the top spot. It works across ages, subjects, and test formats, and it's cheap: a blank page and a question is the whole apparatus.

Distributed practice — spreading study across days — shared the win. Same total hours, dramatically better retention, just by being spread out.

Elaborative interrogation and self-explanation — asking "why is this true" and explaining it back — scored moderate. Powerful but narrower: it needs decent prior knowledge to grab onto.

Interleaved practice — mixing topics — scored moderate-to-promising, strongest in math and problem-solving where the exam won't label the question type.

Why the losers lose

Highlighting and rereading fail for the same reason: they train your eyes, not your memory. Every pass makes the page feel more familiar, and the brain reads familiarity as knowledge. At the exam, the page isn't there — just the question and whatever you can pull up without it.

That's the entire distinction the research keeps drawing: recognition is not retrieval. Study methods that build recognition feel like progress and fail silently. Methods that build retrieval feel like struggle and show up on the exam.
