Desirable Difficulties, Explained Without the Jargon
Every student has felt the paradox: the study session that felt smooth and productive produces nothing on the exam, while the miserable one where you kept failing somehow stuck. Psychologist Robert Bjork gave this a name in the 1990s — a desirable difficulty is a learning condition that slows you down now and makes you stronger later.
The three difficulties worth adding on purpose
Retrieval — answering from memory instead of reviewing. Closing the book feels terrible because it shows you the gaps; that's also exactly why it works. Each successful retrieval strengthens the path you'll need in the exam.
Spacing — spreading practice across days instead of one block. Returning to material after you've partly forgotten it forces relearning, and relearning is where durability comes from (Cepeda et al., 2006).
Variation — mixing problem types and contexts instead of drilling one kind. It feels chaotic and scores worse during practice — and transfers far better to the exam, where problems arrive unlabeled (Rohrer & Taylor, 2007).
Where the idea breaks — the solvability line
The 'desirable' half matters. A difficulty is only desirable if you can resolve it — struggle that ends in an answer teaches, struggle that ends in nothing teaches nothing. Retrieval practice on material you never learned isn't a desirable difficulty; it's just an exam you can't pass yet.
So the rule: hard, but achievable. If you can't produce the answer even after real effort, the difficulty is wrong — go back and learn the material first, then make it hard again.
